We are combining a new approach to water education with the rising wave of digital education

The Alliance for Water Education is a non-profit organization founded to expand opportunities for environmental education in US school grades 6th through 12th.  Our unique and exclusive focus is Water Literacy and sustainable fresh water systems.  We address water through a broad range of topics and offer enrichment opportunities for multiple school subjects.

This is a temporary “placeholder” website. Lesson plans and educational materials will launch in September, 2012. We are currently preparing useful tools for teachers and resources for students. Please sign up for our mailing list to be notified when the first water lessons are available for free download.

Our Founder

The Alliance for Water Education was founded by a California parent, Christie Batterman Jordan, who was inspired to work for Water Literacy after her children graduated from public and private high schools learning very little about water beyond the basic hydrolic cycle.  Christie is an experienced executive who brings to AWE 30 years of expertise as a CEO and social entrepreneur.

“Not teaching our children Water Literacy in the 21st century, is like letting an 18th century child run out in motor traffic without looking both ways.  The emerging global water crisis is going to impact their lives in ways we cannot imagine now.  We must provide our students with realistic information about the physical world they are inheriting so they can be innovators, leaders and problem-solvers.”

Our Future

In 2012, we will create the web-based centralized resource for clearly written lessons, articles and videos on a wide variety of local and international water issues.  These teaching and research opportunities will be based on science, facts and presented impartially. Lessons will be indexed for history, social studies or life science classes.  Teach guides will include discussion questions, bibliographies and links for deeper learning opportunities.  Whenever possible, videos and other visual materials will be included.

In 2013, we will launch The Water Essay Contest nationally, with awards and scholarships.  The Water Essay Contest will be an extracurricular activity present to juniors and seniors by teachers, school newsletters, and through a PR campaign.  The AWE website will serve as the primary research destination with articles and links to many independent resources.

By 2015, we will provide educational materials and awareness about fresh water topics to teachers and 5 million students annually.
